Emily Cornell - Kingwood Park High School

Why I love Kingwood Park.   I love my school because it is the best. I know that’s what almost everyone says about their school but they’re wrong. I know that because in truth my school is the best. Honest to goodness it is. At our school they encourage us to scream it as loud as possible. Well, at least at the pep rallies were each of the classes are encouraged to yell and screech until your head goes light and you are about to topple over onto the weird guy in front of you.   But, that’s only the best part. Then, they wave for you to stand up and stomp your feet and during all of this, your teachers, even the mean ones that you swear hate fuzzy bunnies and even the word ‘happiness’, are smiling and laughing.

One of the best parts is that we leave class in a rush of rock’n’roll. Whenever there is suppose to be a boring bell to ring us out to our next class there is instead the no. 1 song on the charts at the moment ringing us on like a breath of fresh air. It’s corny to say, but after a while only hearing a bell bores you to tears, well it doesn’t it’s just so boring that you want to shove your fingers in your ears to keep out that obnoxious buzzing. It’s good to know that our superiors care about our mental well being.

Plus, our teachers encourage us to wear our caps to school. Well, actually our thinking caps but still a cap none the less. They cheer us on and congratulate us once we do better than we had in the past. Our faculty is truly the best because they stick their neck out to help you unlike at some other schools.  If you didn’t pass a class they might not bat an eye just to get out of the blood, sweat, and tears they would have to endure to get your grade bumped up a point.

Also my peers are the coolest cats in the park. If you trip down the stairs someone magically materializes next to you to help you pick up your back up. They even talk nicely to each other. Everything they seem to say runs like honey, not sickly sweet and annoying, but slowly work its way to your heart and stays there and warms it up. Our peers also motivate us to honestly help us be a better person. This is why K-Park is above and beyond the normal school expectations. This is why K-Park is to be the best school in the district, possibly even the world. This is why I love my K-Park.


Weijie Lin - Kingwood High School

When listening to students perpetually whine about classes, homework, teachers, homework, substitute teachers, and homework, it’s easy to imagine that school is some relative of the concentration camp. I admit, sometimes school is brutal, and I complain just like any other teenager. Yet despite the English analysis journal I have to write tonight and the history chapter that I dread reading, I know I love Kingwood High School. And I know that, when the time comes to write a “Why I Love My School” essay, I will have a plethora of excellent traits of Kingwood High School to offer to you.

When I step into the school building at 6:45 in the morning, I take a deep breath and know that I am in the right place. Sure, I have a Spanish test 2nd period and a nefariously difficult Biology test 6th, but somehow the school contains a tranquil atmosphere, with the sound of teachers ruffling papers in their rooms, the babble of fellow classmates in the commons, and the smell of warm coffee wafting around those carrying mugs. I know I have those tests, but I know that I have studied for them and my teachers have prepared me for them.

When I walk in, I feel that today is another day to learn, to challenge myself, to achieve. I walk into class at 7:25 am. It’s so comforting to know I can expect friendly faces from both students and teachers as I enter. In fact, every single one of my teachers stands at the door to welcome us. It might be a simple and small gesture, but it doesn’t go unnoticed. At least not by me. In the classroom, I feel like others care and respect me. I smile and offer my ideas without having to force myself.

Kingwood High School is the best learning environment I have ever been in. I can say with confidence that all my teachers are fantastic. They all put in extra hours to tutor students, grade, and prepare for classes. I appreciate it. I know that they can easily saunter out at 2:45 pm when the dismissal bell rings, but they stay, some until 6 or 7 at night. The teachers are a blessing to the school. But there are others at school besides teachers and students. There are understanding counselors, unwavering assistant principals, the reputed principal, administrators, janitors, and other staff. I have not met all of them, but I know that they all work hard to make Kingwood High School great.

Like the teachers, many of them put in extra hours. Unlike these great people, however, I walk out at around 3:30 pm, my brain once again overflowing and my heart satisfied with the day’s work. Of course I have several pounds of homework. But I feel like I have accomplished something today and that is the best feeling in the world.

Today was a good day to be a mustang at KHS. Did I mention extracurriculars? At KHS, there are opportunities to do anything. Well, almost. There is a club for a wide array of interests, from Harry Potter Club to National Honor Society to Green Club. The school has excellent programs for fine arts, athletics, and everything in between. And every one of these organizations is ready to receive you with open arms. So why do I love my school? Well, if you don’t know yet, try reading this essay!



Morgan Shepherd  - Quest High School

Why I Love My School.   To be completely honest, until I came to Quest High School I dreaded getting up and coming to school everyday. It is through the education and support from Quest that I have become the person I am today.

I love my school because it is my second home, it makes me think on a higher level, and it helps me get ahead in life. Quest is like a home away from home. Quest has an advisory period which we call “family”. Family is more than just a class for our teachers to nag us about our grades. In family we share our struggles and support for each other. Family provides a sense of belonging for everyone. No one is left out of any activity. Through family we participate in various team building activities and sports, we work on improving our emotional health, and we get to learn more about each other. One family activity that sticks out in my mind is, “the helium stick”. It is a long stick, everyone has to put one finger on the stick and it is not allowed to come off. You must lower the stick all the way to the ground as a team without anyone’s finger coming off. Sounds fairly simple right? Wrong we had to attempt this multiple times in order to succeed. We learned to speak one at a time and listen to each others ideas instead of everyone just doing their own thing.

After we participate in these activities our advisors break them down and explain to us to make us think of how we can apply what we did in our everyday lives. We are to think on a higher level than the average high school student. We dig deep into our activities and assignments instead of just skimming the surface. One subject we dug deep into was poverty. For almost three months we study multiple aspects of poverty such as, what causes it, how can it be fixed, who is affected by it and so on. At Quest we must master every objective. If there is one objective we have not mastered we have to correct the assignment and prove that we understand and master that objective.

We also have reflections we fill out on ourselves and classmates. This helps us see what we need to improve on and what we are good at. Quest has also helped me get ahead of the average high school student by preparing me thoroughly for college. As a senior we meet with our counselor and talk to her about college, scholarships and our future plans. She helps us plan out what we need to do to get into college and encourages us in our journey. I meet with her on a regular basis; she helps me review different scholarships and tells me which ones I qualify for.

Our exploratory foundations facilitators help us write essays for colleges and scholarships. Also as a senior we participate in “senior exhibition” which we are required to pass in order to graduate. This is a project that we work on in groups of 3-5. We have to create a power point, speech, and social action plan. A past senior exhibition group wrote a play about immigration in America. They got various middles schools to perform it in order to educate their peers on immigration and how they could help. Through “senior exhibition” we learn to work as a group, solve problems, and manage our time. We also learn how to speak in public.

I love my school because it is my second home, it makes me think on a higher level and it helps me get ahead in life. My school is amazing and I am very sad to leave. I know full well that there are many capable students to carry on our traditions and to keep giving Quest a good name. I love my school and there isn’t a thing I would change about it.


Kinsey Cline - Atascocita High School

Why I Love My School For the past three years, I have spent over thirty-five hours a week at Atascocita High School from the end of August to the beginning of June. While school is not always fun or easy, I endeavor to make it a positive experience at all times. I believe that education is very important, and I want to graduate with as much knowledge as possible in order to excel in college and beyond.

I believe attitude is a major factor in life; I am optimistic because I want to enjoy as much of life as possible. Since school is a huge part of life for a teenager, I try to focus on the positive aspects of it. However, I am still a teenager; I would absolutely rather hang out with friends than take a calculus test, but I know that making an A in calculus is going to help me get into college.

It is not the building, the classes, the sports, or the lunches that I love about Atascocita High School. I am now almost half way through my senior year, and looking back on my high school experience, I can honestly say that I love my school because of my teachers. Students spend a lot of time at school—in class, tutoring, and at practices and rehearsals after school. That means they spend a lot of time around their teachers, and when those teachers are pleasant to be around, life is good.

Teachers can easily exploit their authority; they are not required to make life easy for us. Naturally, all people are different, and so some teachers have connected with me more than others, but never have I had a teacher who was outright unbearable. It is a natural reaction to dislike teachers of subjects you are bad at or just do not enjoy, but this has not happened in my experience.

My worst subject is science, but both my chemistry and physics teachers were people I appreciated and got along with. They both continue to greet me in the hallway, though with over three thousand kids in the school I can only imagine how many names they must learn each year. My teachers made themselves very accessible to us, their students, for tutoring before and after school, and sometimes even during off-periods.

Sometimes I have a hectic schedule because of choir and dance, and my teachers were always available when I needed them. Sophomore year, my world history teacher was my favorite. I had history, usually a class that I dread, seventh (last) period, but I looked forward to it because my teacher made it interesting. He was very creative and let us be creative, too. When there was a project assigned there was always more than one way to accomplish it. My favorite project of the year was when we studied medieval castles; we were asked to build one, and kids arrived at school with castles built out of crayons, soda cans, marshmallows, and even sand.

This teacher also told me about a program that our school has called AVID—Advancement Via Individual Determination. Part of the program is tutoring, and my history teacher got me a job tutoring freshmen at my school during an early release period. When students like their teachers, I believe it inspires them to put more effort into their classes, therefore giving them a better education and school experience. They wants their teachers to be proud of them, so they try their best and ask for help when necessary, leading to achievement that may not have come if they had only tried some of the time because they didn’t care what the teachers thought. I love my school because my teachers have been the best that I could have asked for.


Brittney McNeil - Humble High School

In this essay it is my intention to prove why Humble High School is the best in Humble ISD. Everyone has there different opinions about the determined purple Wildcats rather it be because of our IB, AVID scholars, our head held high football team, those feisty ladies in competitive athletics, the toe touching cheerleaders or may its those flexible wild cadet dancers . Whatever the reason may be, we are envied throughout the district.

I have grown up in the Humble Wildcat family for the last three years and now that I’m a senior I can't believe my time is almost over. I know that I will leave this campus and remain a wildcat at heart. As I look back on my time here I know that everybody played a part in all of the seniors’ success in achieving and looking ahead to the '2010 graduation. From the incoming freshmen, the "I’m not a fish anymore" sophomores, “almost there" juniors and even those teachers who lead us to class after every tardy bell play apart.

The teachers at Humble High have never given up on us even though at times its hard to comprehend all the information thrown at us they still are our back bone, they keep us wanting to come back everyday. They are always around to lend a helping hand throughout the building when they can be at home they are here with us after and before school. They as a whole make our school unique and it’s not just because of those rigorous advanced placement courses. Like seriously, who else has there own singing Mr. Monk after every lunch. Who else has a principal who remembers every student individually like Mr.Stowers, and that’s just to name a few?

Humble High is a journey that will get us all here to a destination and I could go on all day about why my school is the best but, I’ll just end it here because I don’t want to make the other schools more jealous then the already are.


Maria Squire - Quest High School

“I hate you” I said tears running down my face. “I trusted you and you told on me” I shook as anger and fear coursed through my body. “I was worried about you” Mr. James told me, concern on his face. “I told because I’m scared for you, I told because I care about you.” I sat there arms folded tightly across my chest, feeling small and helpless. “Let us help you” he said hugging me.

I love Quest High School because our teachers will do anything for their students. I was diagnosed with depression in ninth grade. I had been cutting since sixth grade. As I started my freshman year at Kingwood Park High School, I wanted to turn my life around. I wanted to be happy, but I was already caught in addiction. If you didn’t fit in the prep or jock stereotype you were a freak. I didn’t fit into those categories, and I was treated like an outcast. I let myself fall completely into cutting, the only thing that comforted me. That blade was my only friend. What hurt me the most was none of the teachers noticed my cry for help.

Teachers say if you ever need anything you can tell them, you can talk to them for help. I spoke to one of my teachers about it, she said she was going to talk to the counselor to get me help, but nothing ever happened. I was still alone. At Kingwood Park teaching was just a job, something to put money in the bank.

I transferred to Quest High School broken, bruised and hopeless, not knowing it would save me. Everyone at Quest seemed to instantly be there for me, immediately noticing that I needed support and someone to talk to. There were no cliques, no stereotypes. Everyone knew everyone else; it was like a big family. All the teachers wanted to help me, but I was scared of change so I pretended nothing was wrong. I was terrified of what would happen if they discovered my secret.

Mr. James was the one who wouldn’t quit on me, and in the end he was the one who saved me. He noticed cuts on my arm one day, and asked if I needed someone to talk to. I confided in him that I had been using cutting as a stress reliever for six years, and I couldn’t stop. He told me that he had to tell my parents, and that led to me being put in a psychiatric hospital. I despised him for telling on me, I felt used and hurt. I had trusted him with my biggest secret and he told.

After thinking about it I realized that he was only trying to help. I was heading downhill so fast; he stopped me and saved my life. Quest teachers have a willingness to help their students. That willingness not only changed my life, but the lives of many others before me. I know they will continue to change student’s lives in the future. Mr. James saw me barely treading water. He offered me his hand, something no teacher had ever done before. His care and willingness to help pulled me out of my cutting addiction and probably saved my life. I love Quest High School because our teachers will do anything for their students.

"Why I Love My School" Essay Contest
 

Let’s turn your school spirit into a great essay describing the reasons your school campus

 is the BEST in Humble ISD.

This essay contest will have three categories:

• Elementary schools
• Middle schools
• High schools.

One winner will be selected for each category. 

Prizes - The winners will have their essays displayed on Kingwood.com and Atascocita.com in the News section and the Schools section. 

They will also win monetary prizes.

Contest rules:

Dates – October 16, 2009 – November 13, 2009

Apply online via Kingwood.com or Atascocita.com

Student must be enrolled and attend an Humble ISD school.

Essays should be a minimum of 100 words and not more than 1000 words. 

 The essay entries will be judged on creativity, individuality and grade appropriate grammar and spelling. 

  A photo may also be submitted with each essay. 

Winners will be announced on November 20, 2009 and the essays will run on

 Kingwood.com and Atascocita.com on Monday November 23rd.

 

It's Homecoming Dance weekend for Kingwood High School
 

The Homecoming Dance is Saturday, October 10th at the Humble Civic Center from 8p.m. to 11 p.m. The dance is one week earlier than the game this year. This is due to booking of the Civic Center well in advance of the football schedule coming out.
The Homecoming Game is on Friday Oct. 16th against Humble. There is not a Homecoming parade this year.
Dance tickets are now on sale at all lunches.  Cost is $25 each which includes a shirt and a souvenir at the dance.  Tickets are sold in the "flex area" behind the main gym.  If paying by check, please make it out to "KHS." Tickets will be sold until Friday, Oct 9th.  Tickets will not be sold at the door.
 

Students bringing an "out of school" date must see their Asst. Principal for a permission form. 
 

Homecoming Mums are to be worn the day (and night) of the Homecoming Game...October 16th. KHS Homecoming Mums use our school colors: Navy blue, Columbia blue, and white.  There are no specific grade level colors at KHS.

All KPHS students should pick up back to school packets from 8 AM to 4 PM

on Friday, August 7th or Monday, August 10th.  

Packets should be returned at Panther Camp.

A copy of a current utility bill must be presented before students will be allowed to enter Panther Camp.

High School Choices - Parent Information Night

Wednesday, December 10th

Humble ISD is offering High School Choice Parent Information Night at the James D. Eggers Instructional Support Center.  The program is aimed at students in grades 7-10 and their families, but is open to the public.

Participants will learn about educational choices offered by Humble ISD including: Quest High School, Kingwood Park High School, the International Baccalaureate Program, Career and Technical Education, and Dual Credit and Early College. Most programs require advance application, so the middle school years are a good time to begin thinking about high school choices.


Humble ISD Final Election Results

Approval of the Tax Rate Rollback passed - 65% FOR vs 35% AGAINST

According to the Humble ISD website - Approval of this tax rate rollback means that Humble ISD will not need to make reductions beyond the $9 million already cut for this school year. It means that Humble ISD will receive about $17 million needed to balance the budget this year.Since about 87% of the school district's budget is personnel, these funds would be used for salaries and to keep existing programs in place.

Kingwood High School Homecoming Information

  • The Homecoming Game is Friday night, October 10, at 7:30 p.m. vs. MacArthur High School. 
  • The crowning of the Homecoming Court and the presentation of Beaus and Sweethearts will be at the pre-game ceremonies at 7:00 p.m.  The voting for Homecoming Court will be in MAP classes on Oct. 3 and Oct. 10th.  
  • The Homecoming Dance is on Saturday, October 11th from 8-11 p.m. at the Humble Civic Center.  Dress is semi-formal.  Cost per student is $20.00 each.  Tickets will be sold at all lunches during Spirit Week, October 6-10.  You do not need a date to attend this dance.  Pictures are available at the dance.  Portrait pricing will be posted around the school on Friday.

  • eSchool Plus - Keeping Track of Students at Humble ISD

    Parents of students attending Humble ISD schools may have noticed that the "back to school" packet contained a form entitled "eSchool Home Access Reference Guide".  This new software package is replacing the Pinnacle Internet Viewer (PIV) application which parents have previously used to view students grades online. 

    Having moved into this school district from a not so technologically savvy district, I thought the PIV application was great.  There was no longer any need to depend solely on progress reports and report cards to determine how your child was performing academically.  

    While checking on the recently updated Humble ISD website for more information, I couldn't help but notice that there was a tagline stating that the eSchool Home Access Center would be available on August 25th, the first day of school.  This updated later disappeared with no further mention.  We contacted Mike Drachenberg, Executive Director of Technology Services for Humble ISD and were told that "the system is ready to go and campuses are preparing, as we speak", to communicate with parents regarding access (to the new system).

    Mr. Drachenberg added that "Campuses will be sharing detailed information on this soon but the new system will work somewhat differently than the previous software in that parents will be able to setup their own accounts.  Previously, the campuses had to generate the IDs and passwords and then distribute this information with instructions for accessing the application.  With the new software, parents will be able to setup their own accounts provided they are listed as a parent/guardian for the student".

    A little digging around reveals that the eSchool Plus application is much more robust than the previous PIV, but perhaps it's enhanced abilities are intended for a much more complex administrative mission. 

    As quoted from the eSchool Plus website, this software is focused on "meeting accountability requirements".   Emphasis is placed on ease of tracking student's performance as required by No Child Left Behind (NCLB) measures.  However this software also facilitates tracking of other areas such as scheduling, attendance, discipline, standardized tests, report cards and transcripts. 

    Hopefully the transition to this new software will be seamless and will result in teachers having more time available to teach instead of keeping up with administrative reporting.  Mr. Drachenberg added that "it's not uncommon for some isolated issues to appear due to the magnitude of the conversion.  Parents will need to contact the school to report any problems with setting up the accounts so that campus personnel can troubleshoot and correct the problem.  While we expect some hiccups early in the account setup process, we are excited about providing parents access to some great applications that will help them monitor their student's academic progress".

    Although the eSchool Plus website does not leave you with the warm fuzzy feeling that experimental learning and evoking critical thinking by our students is the software's company top priority,  it is too early to tell since the product is not yet available for Home Access viewing.
