Kingwood Annexation

Community Guide » Kingwood Annexation » Index

On December 11, 1996, Kingwood was officially annexed by the city of Houston. The area is still referred to as "Kingwood," and retains its "Kingwood, TX" mailing address.

Some residents in the community were opposed to the annexation and tried to set up a petition in 1999 for deannexation, but failed. Banners that read "Free Kingwood" can occasionally still be seen. Reasons for opposing the annexation include: a possible decrease in quality of services, and an increase in taxation. Arguments for annexation include: Because a substatial population in Kingwood relies and benefits from the services provided by the city of Houston, annexation is needed to fund the city for these services.
