The young pilot who departed the airplane in flight.....

a couple of weeks ago without a parachute in Raleigh Durham, North Carolina, was a friend of my son. The NTSB report came in today.

It gave a preliminary indication that the pilot was so upset about having broken off a landing wheel during a hard landing that he threw up, removed his headset, apologized for the landing, and departed the aircraft at 3500 feet.

He was 23 years old... his name was Charles but they called him Shred. Aviation was his absolute first love and it's likely he thought he might not get to continue flying because of the landing. Prayers for the other pilot, and for the family. Rest in peace, Shred.

@QueenB : That was the big question why would he jump out of the plane. Poor thing if he only knew that that was not important. May he Rest In Peace

Dear God. Did he have depression or mental problems bc that was so extreme there are no words. So sorry for your son and all involved in a tragic loss of such young promising life.

@sweetie : That's what I told my son.... that was the reasoning of a very young person. If only he had reached out to the other pilot with his concerns instead.

@MissAmericanPie : Here's the thing about pilots.... heaven forbid they get sad or have any mental problems... they can easily lose their medical certificate. Without that, they don't fly. I wish the FAA would include a psychiatric eval in their annual exam. That way they can discuss any mental problems versus just keeping everything inside. I can see the inability to bring up mental problems having been a problem with the GermanWings pilot who flew that plane full of passengers into a mountainside.

@QueenB : I know. They would just fake it to pass the evaluation anyway bc instead of treating and supporting them, they are encouraged to hide it. Stupid

Oh my heart @QueenB . I am so sorry. Sounds like absolutely nothing could have been controlled by him. I can't even imagine. One of my dreams was to have been a Pilot (not on towboats but planes). Praying for his family and loved ones. May Shred rest in peace and love.

@QueenB : How did the wheel break off if he was still 3500 in the air? Did he try to land and then put the aircraft back up in the air? This is so sad. I'm so sorry for your sone all all involved.

amanda79: He had begun the landing when the plane went into an uncommanded drop. The landing gear struck the runway before he could go to the go around procedure. They did begin the go around, got back up to 3500 feet and that's when the young man exited the plane. I suppose he thought he had done irreparable damage to his aviation career and thought he couldn't go on without being able to fly. That's just my thought, we'll never know. Credit to the other pilot for being able to emergency land it afterward.

@QueenB : I'm reading reports that he jumped OR fell. Has it been confirmed that it was intentional? Either way, it's terrible.

@J2911 : It has been confirmed by the NTSB that he exited the airplane intentionally. ðŸ˜¢
