buffaloglenn : I was thinking the same. I think the sharks we have in Galveston that people like to call hammerheads are actually called bonnet head sharks. There are literally tons of them, if you go fishing of the pier in the spring you'll catch baby ones all day long. They look more like this.

@ZMAN : I caught one of those many years ago off the pier. Thought it was a hammerhead as well. Now I know! Emoticon

@ExCTGuyInTX : They're always out there and all regular anglers know the risks, especially in this location. But also, it's where the sharks live, so ?? Anyone going to any beach and thinks it's free of sharks (or other animals that might bite out of curiosity or hunger) is fooling themselves. You are more at risk from the trash people leave On Our Beaches! And maybe get stung by jellies.

ZMAN : I have never felt the same about sharks since seeing the movie Jaws. 😂

@Donnawisdom : You should watch the movie The Shallows. I love it, but it's scary!!!

@ExCTGuyInTX : One of my grandson's friends visited while we were there. He waded out waist high, cast and caught a little shark I would guess was about 18 or so inches long.

It's where they live... I've been diving with a bunch of different types of sharks and never had a problem..
Though murky water, lots of feet bouncing around and people fishing, could be a different story. I have seen people fishing for tiger sharks out of the back of their truck down there. But it is where they live and they were there first..they would much rather eat fish.

I've caught many a foot long bonnet heads at San Luis Pass. Cool fish! I've also caught dangerous sized bull sharks in the surf between there and Galveston. Those scare me more than other varieties. Only place I encountered hammerheads was on the Port Aransas jetties. But as with all shark species, just because you don't see them doesn't mean they're not there.

@ExCTGuyInTX : Hammerhead sharks are not aggressive to humans, unless they are provoked, and they are not known to attack people either. But hammerheads are aggressive hunters in the wild and can often be found hunting in the shallows off beaches in Florida.
