Oh, they absolutely do hiss! They just have a whole vocabulary! And the males, especially can be aggressive!

She could try making a cage out of chicken wire and putting around the bulbs. I make a complete circle out mine, insert bulbs and then plant, so far 2 years and no critter feasting on them.
