@Donnawisdom : I would like to buy a place there, but unfortunately, even the cheapest place is beyond my meager budget so if I want to go and enjoy it, I will be renting, which is OK because one hurricane could really mess you up down there.

Another really fun thing you can do in Key West is to go by the Mel Fisher Museum, where they have on display many artifacts from the Atocha shipwreck. The last time I visited, they had an actual gold bar about twice the size of a broomstick, and about 8 inches long that you could actually pick up in your hand and feel what it was like to have real "pirate"gold. That was quite a thrill to me and worth the price of admission right there. They had all kinds of things for sale, most of them out of my budget, but very very cool.

One of the really cool thing to do in the keys is to get on a small plane or an open ultralight and fly over the area that you intend to frequent. I can tell you from first-hand experience, that when I first went up to the open ultralight and the alligator reef area, that I had no idea there were that many sunken boats all over that area from the shore to the tower. It was amazing. The other thing I found fascinating was that I was told it was mating season for nurse sharks. They were everywhere as we flew over it 100 to 200 feet. many or 5 to 6 feet long. Of course, nurse sharks won't bother you as they are shrimp and bottom feeders mostly like big catfish. All of that said, if you go down there, I would highly recommend a plane ride because it is totally different than being on the bank or on the water.

@Jellybeaner : it sure was JB. We drank frozen piña colada's and margaritas all the way back on the boat. After about two hours we were feeling pretty good. The frozen drinks they made us were absolutely fantastic and only six dollars apiece. Beers for like three dollars apiece so the boat was not gouging It's clientele at all. They also have several campsites available to folks to rent right by the fort. I'm probably gonna sign up and do a camp trip down there and spend a couple nights looking at the stars. I think that would be pretty neat. I am attaching a few more photos to this message of the campsites in case anybody might be interested. I also have some paper brochures that lay out the camping parameters so if anybody is interested in those specific things, I'm happy to post pictures of that as well. Likewise, I am putting in a picture of a job opening posting for anybody that might want to move down there and work. I was tempted and still am ha ha.

Last pic, attached....I ran across this online...not one of my own photos, but it is a really good angle from up high, shows a bird's eye view of a beautiful place. My next trip there will probably be by air....saving $$ now for that $800/seat junket. Enjoy!

Airborne319 : We also have rented at Rainbow Bend near Marathon...they used to give you a 15' Boston Whaler for 1/2 day each day. Not sure they do that anymore but of course, good fishing there too: www.rainbowbend.com/ We also rented a house on the ocean side about mile marker 82...called Russell House. Had private beach and dock. Pricey but nice. I think the last hurricane may have dealt it some wounds. We also rented an oceanside house maybe 85?? mile marker. Had beach but no dock. Got there and realtor had left letter of greeting on table for when we arrived. It said basically, welcome, and watch out for "Tick Tock". I was like, what the heck is a TT? Come to find out from the pool man who stopped by, it was a very large gator or croc living in that vicinity that frequented the area. I was not happy about this revelation. That said, back in the day, we snorkeled around mangroves, etc etc. and never worried about anything, but now there are beaucoup rules that protect gators and saltwater crocs (endangered) so they are showing up on people's beaches, docks, etc. Dangerous. Something to think about, along with the protected sharks, which are becoming more prolific...Bull sharks. I personally think that going south...maybe past 7 mile bridge, will preclude the majority of reptiles but if they keep these critters on endangered lis and let them move in, it could be a show stopper for a good bit of tourism...I'm not a fan of them and wish they were more in check or not there like they are.

@Maver1ck : Thanks for the info. I will definitely check that out.

@Airborne319 : Sure thing glad to help. It's a great trip anytime in the keys. I'd love to on a place down there but unfortunately I don't have that kind of money, so I'll just have to rent from time to time.

@NeenaC0629 : You are quite welcome, my pleasure. Going to the dry Tortugas was a first for me and pretty neat considering that I have never been even after going to the keys over 100 times since the 1960s! 😊

@Kittle : Thanks! The ferry served us bagels and fruits and juices on the way there (free) and then had free Jersey mikes subs and chips for lunch. We are on one of the outside picnic tables…nice.

On the way back, they had piña colada's, and margaritas and a bunch other stuff that you could eat like pizza and hamburgers and hotdogs for a small charge, but still pretty darn cheap moneywise. The ferry Road cost us about $185 each and considering it was an all day affair I thought it was quite a bargain. Would love to do it again with all the grandkids, so maybe next year… I'm saving some money up here to make it happen😊

I've wanted to visit the Dry Tortugas for a long time now. Great pics. Thanks for sharing. I want to do the sea plane to get there though.
