Little shop of horrors was my absolute favorite off Broadway show @catperson1....when I saw Seymour before I read the rest it's exactly what I thought of! Emoticon

@KanKan : The starter is what makes your bread rise. You have to make your starter or you can buy it commercially. A lot of people who make their starter from scratch (me) name their starters, mine is called Virgil. The starter is a live culture of flour and water and you have to feed or refresh it every day or it will become sluggish and even die if you let it go too long without fresh flour and water. It takes time, about two weeks, to make a starter that has enough strength to make a loaf rise. It's quite process to be honest but I love it.

@amanda79 a sourdough starter is a live fermented culture of fresh flour and water. Once combined, the culture will begin to ferment and cultivate the natural yeasts found in our environment. A small portion is added to your bread dough to make it rise.

The starter is not hard to make amanda79...it just takes time.
 
@Chiza : So do you make it each time you want to make bread, or is it something you make and store to use as needed?

I did that in the 80's and 90's when my dh was alive and kids at home, now I rarely eat bread.
