Insulin Pump with T1 diabetes

My son has had his for a couple of weeks or so now but it's still not keeping him even close to normal. Anyone have any experience with using them that may have some insight? I do like that I can keep a pretty constant check on his BCG every 5 minutes and I get alarms to my phone if it goes to high or to low. This is his current reading and what it's looked like over the past 24 hours. Yes, he is in constant contact with his Doctor, just looking for some real life experiences.

Normal should be in the 70-130ish range.

My husband has had type 1 diabetes for 42 years.
Insulin pumps - never worked right and caused many issues.
We did have more luck with the Glucose trackers "Freestyle Libre".
However, after many months the Glucose tracker was not 100% accurate.

@BooBear : Hello Ms BooBear, is he taking fast acting as well as slow acting insulins?

Sometimes in the initial stages it can get a bit high while you learn about timing, length, and dosage of infusions vs what he eats, exercises, etc.

We found it extremely helpful to keep the pump company rep involved as they usually know a bit more regarding functionality and settings. They know how to troubleshoot so well and I bet can look at this graph and quickly know the problem.

@BooBear : I also meant to ask how you are getting as many data points, does he have a sensor like the Dexcom?

@LizBeth91 : with the pump it only uses the fast acting in microdoses then a bolos with meals. The rep is "following" him so she sees his graph in real time as well. It's been a while and we expected it to be a little crazy at first, but the highs and lows, thankfully he doesn't have a tendency to get too low, are crazy.

@LizBeth91 : yes, he has a CGM and the pump. It reads every 5 minutes. This is last 12 hours..it held pretty stable but high over night.

@BooBear : It looks like they are being conservative initially as they learn of how his body reacts to the pump/ insulin. They may likely increase the dosage incrementally. It starting to look better though. Eventually I really think it's going to absolutely help to keep him in much more control over his BG and much better health. My hubby did extremely well with his and really liked his system. Got much better control.

@LizBeth91 : I'm hoping so. His last A1c was 15.5..the problem with him is that he is used to how he feels when it's about 300. When it starts to go lower, he starts to feel badly, like he is low. It wouldn't be good to suddenly drop him in to "normal" I just hate all of this.

@BooBear : Oh, yes. I completely understand now!

It will take a little bit of time but he will slowly start regaining a better perception of BG levels. I understand now as to the settings they started him on. I am so hopeful that he will eventually gain near physiological BG! I'm so excited for you guys 😊

@BooBear : Nice and easy, don't want to shock the system.

It will get better!!! It just takes time! Some days are god days and some days are bad days. You just have to take it day by day, sometimes hour by hour. His body will get used to being in the normal range soon enough. The most important thing to remember is to be patient and forgiving! Diabetes sucks so much, but it doesn't have to control you life!
