@Rocklady2020: not sure if the plan is to leave your natural hair to grow , but that's the way I did it as well. Now I have long pepper/ white hair that I love very much .

Rocklady2020 : My hair was down to my waist when I had it all cut off. I was 50. It was a shock but after a couple days, I was feeling better about it. Yeah, it shocked everyone. At the same time I quit coloring my hair. No regrets 20 years later.
