Elevator Lobby Mailbox / Chute

Elevator Lobby Mailbox / Chute

Do you remember seeing/using these mailboxes/chutes in office buildings - usually in between elevators? The main box is on the bottom floor with a chute that is connected to slots on every floor.

@Redmulch : I remember seeing these all the time in bank lobbys and other office buildings growing up. My mom probably saw them as a godsend since I'd stand there watching the mail come down the chute and into the box (the chute had glass on the front). She could conduct her business in the bank without worrying that I was going to wander off. This was in the Metro Pittsburgh PA area. 4951

@Forbin : In the Western Nc mountains where I grew up we didn't have that we did, however, have two story department stores where they had pneumatic tubes to send payment up to a cashier Abe a receipt back. 4951

@Forbin : Yes. In fact when I travel on business to Hartford, CT, I stay at the Homewood Suites. It was renovated from the Bond Hotel which was some hoity toity hotel back in the day. They have the mailbox and chute. The older elevators are a trip too. On the top floor they have an incredible venue that is still called the "Bond Ballroom." 4951

Yes I remember those - saw them in older high rise buildings in Ohio. Really haven't been in any high rise buildings here in Houston. 4951

@Forbin : When I worked in offices in downtown Houston, the buildings all had them. Of course this was in the 60s & 70s. Some of you may remember I was an evening elevator operator in my teen years. Coolest job I ever had. 4951
