I don't go to malls…just not my cup of tea. Just my opinion, not worth it.

@JandS89 : I used to like to go to Deerbrook Mall before they opened to walk when it's too hot outside. I didn't feel unsafe, but I'm afraid that my CAT replacement that is now painted bright orange and engraved would be stolen.

Life's a cycle. Things change. There is no normal. COVID really reitterated that. People move. We either live with it or we move. I'm not planning on moving unless it's to a Florida beach town, which is highly unlikely now.

@Reverb2000 : "before"?..it ,sadly, already has. When they put in the "everything under $7" stores, you know a mall has completed the slide, down hill. Enjoyed Deerbrook as my kids grew, but when Foley's became the "Dump Macys" there (Macy's dumps all of the mostly unsellable merchandise there), I was done going there. I did get my glasses at the optical place by Sears, and my older son bought me some super comfortable and cute Van's at DB, last April. We tend to go elsewhere, now Emoticon

We went there for the first day grand opening in 1984. My firstborn was in her yellow stroller and me and my mother-in-law entered many of the give always. We didn't win a thing but it was a great experience. Even in '84 Greenspoint was going downhill. Calling Deerbrook "ghetto" has a negative reflection considering what many believe "ghetto" to mean. While I rarely go into the mall anymore, I do shop the Hobby Lobby in Humble as it's bigger and has a larger selection. Overall Deerbrook mall is transitioning down as most malls are these days.

I think "ghetto" just means poor area.
Some people think that it's a knock against black people, but that just shows that they don't know their English.
The original ghetto was a quarter in Italy where Jewish people were segregated, which predates the American "ghetto" by about 500-600 years.
I can use "slum" if you prefer, but I feel the work is pretty race-neutral, especially if you look at its etymology.
It just happens that lots of rappa-gangstas like to talk about how they rollin' in the ghetto so perhaps it obtained currency as a black word.

The mall is fine. All this Deathbrook stuff makes me 🙄. I'm there at least 4 days a week for work.

@Govchance : Me, too, but it has been hit or miss lately. I love the chicken fried steak but it has changed, still good but not as good so last time I had the filet and it was excellent. My DH always has it and his was not great. Sides were not as big but okay. We eat out way too much but both of us work hard and don't want to cook afterwards. I cooked at the beach this weekend and decided I might have lost my touch!
