Take a few days for the poison to be fatal to the liver. In the meantime they wander around. My old dog TJ tried to catch a poisoned rat- thankfully we were right there before he sank his teeth into the rat. We don't use poison but my neighbor used to talk about putting poison out. 4951

@Labslady : Snap traps can only catch so many, and using cats or snakes is probably not much more comfortable for the rats, I would guess. They do so much damage that I just don't really feel sorry for them. If they didn't love tractor wiring so much, I might have more pity on them, but I don't. 4951

@buffaloglenn : Oh I agree- but I just don't want to see anyone else's pets get sick or die. 4951

He could have died of disease or other natural causes. You probably want to wear gloves when disposing of him and disinfect that area. Rats carry all sorts of disease. It might also be good to examine your home to see if there are openings that he might have come in through. If you find cracks or other openings best to block them up so others don't come inside. Rats can carry all sorts of diseases as well as the diseases on the fleas most of them have. If he died of disease then you do not want to catch it. 4951
