mutton: So it is because of the surroundings that she doesn't welcome visitors?

@Nuisance : I believe she is embarrassed by the sights you see as you drive to her place. Someone else who knows the area says it can be rough at night also. I never press her for more info to respect how she feels.

It was back a lane off Ford Road or Mills Branch don't remember which

@Nusiance : Dogwood Acres area maybe? That's the area that decades ago gave some Kingwoodies some concern. That just came up the other day - wondering if it made it through Harvey, and/or through the continued expansion of Kingwood what with Royal Brook and Woodstream and such growing up back there. Or if Houston was providing services, or if they were somehow omitted from annexation.

General commentary, supporting what a couple others have mentioned - there are tons of little roads in East Montgomery County, including right by Kingwood, that aren't that different from rural Kentucky. Complete with pretty trees! (And indeed, trash pickup service, much less heavy trash pickup, is NOT an given everywhere.)

mutton : I was born and raised in southern Ohio. We are/were considered Appalachia but I never new it. I knew it but considering how some lived I just didn't feel like it. Does that make sense? We didn't have a lot but had employed parents, a house and food. Mom made a lot of my sister and my clothes but and we had a happy home. Yes, there was poverty but I wasn't affected by it. I know some of my school mates were though.

@Nusiance : I think that is how the majority of us grew up whether in the hills or valleys. We all pitched in and helped keep things mowed, clean and fixed up because our parents were busy. We always had food to eat and things to do outside if we had free time that day. The house and yard always stayed clean and decent looking. It's often the people in poverty that have no job and sit outside and drink beer all afternoon that have the messy yard and house that's coming apart. Strange how that works.

@msuz : You speak the truth. Years ago we send to do organized off road Jeep rides. One such trip took us to Southern KY/Northern TN. Beautiful country extremely remote. We had permission to use government and private land and we were warned to be respectful of the country folk. They weren't friendly to outsiders. These Jeep only events weren't about tearing up the land with a beer in one hand screaming "Hey looky what I can do". We were all adults over 25 who appreciated our Jeeps and what we could do. We were off road but also used old logging and mail roads.
We saw places so remote that there was no running water or electricity and outhouses were a thing. Some places were so remote that the owners would have to go to "town" that consisted of a house and a store the size of Starbucks to get mail. Other places had service but dang the mail person definitely needed an off road vehicle to deliver.

So yes- there is no trash pick up to these remote places. They were basically cut off from the rest of the country. It was beautiful but no way would I want to live there

beadweaver : Some tenants don't care. I had two landlords tell me I left the places in better shape when I moved out than when I moved in. Thing is if you keep it clean there isn't much to do when you move out. Not rocket science. Well for most anyway.

@Nusiance : Jumping in at bottom here, it's a fact that if a man puts no sweat and toil of his own into the roof over his head he will have no respect for that dwelling. And look at us now - squatter nation on the rise. Scary out there.

@Labslady : It did not go unnoticed that these backwoods dwellings are not exactly land poor. These dwellings have back 40's that sat pretty empty. Why sit a toilet on your porch or front lawn (along with all sorts other trash scattered freely throughout front lawn ). I just can not wrap my head around such filth. And it's a MINDSET. I don't get it.

Ruger5 : sadly on the back 40 it takes money to make money. 40 acres doesnt bring a whole lot these days. I have seen where commodes and cast iron tubes are used for garden decorative pieces. Even in "artistry"the supplies may be out of their reach. Many places in Houston where you will see the same thing everyday.

@e : If only the toilets I saw were adorned with flowers. 😂

Be careful. Desperation, dirt poor-yes. Lazy? They have other daily priorities, like survival. They know when a strange car is in the neighborhood and tend to rely on a 12 gauge instead of a Ring door bell system. You're more than brave for taking those pics.

@bigcity : In hindsight I realize I was downright STUPID. We were literally in Deliverance

God delivered us from Deliverance in one piece. 🙏

@Ruger5 : So true! People are more likely to take good care of things they own that took them years of hard work to acquire. Free stuff quickly turns into more trash.
