Busy Moms Day at Kroger!

Loading Image...

Stopped by Kroger for a few things, and found it Very busy. Mostly with men, who were buying Mother's Day gifts. Nice idea. Kroger, however, in their usual 'way', is charging $23 for a dozen chocolate dipper strawberries! Get the berries ( 2.99 for a 1lb container), and a can of Duncan Hines chocolate frosting, and dip them yourself. Give the other $18 to Mom, and she can choose some cute jammies, at WalMart! Did you men buy something for your wives, for Mother's Day; maybe for your kids to give her, or 'just because'?

@LittleTexas :
I don't buy strawberries anymore. They're always sour and unripe, even dipped in chocolate, tho it helps the sourness.
Even in ice cream, they're sour!

When I was a kid in CA, I loved strawberries bc they were sweet and delicious. It's just not the case anymore!

@MissAmericanPie :
I got some good strawberries at WalMart the other day; you are right, they are not very sweet or flavorful. Usually I want until they are about 99 cents, as they seem to have Some flavor, then, since it's the end of the season, or close to it.

will have to check them out, thank you! I warm up some frosting, and the kids love dipping them.

@MissAmericanPie : Have you tried the hydroponic strawberries at H‑E‑B? They are the only kind I buy now. I get them when they are on sale because they are pricier than the regular ones. They are grown in water instead of soil. They had them on sale last week for three dollars. They actually smell and taste like strawberries should.

On Wednesday Costco delivered delicious fresh strawberries to me for Mothers' Day. Because they were at the peak of perfection, strawberries we didn't eat that evening went into the freezer. We've eaten some each day (yum). We have a few left to enjoy today right on Mothers' Day.

Dd#1 had ordered a beautiful bouquet of mixed flowers for me, a trial of Costco's delivery service. Would Costco deliver way out here (about 25 miles between us)? Yes, they would. But this bouquet didn't cost enough for free delivery, so dd#3 thought a minute, then added strawberries and organic bananas to make the total order qualify for free delivery.

@Weathergirl5 : No, I haven't! I'll look for those to try, thank you! That sounds interesting about the water..idk where we get our strawberries from here in Tx? Mexico? I think they just have to pick them too early and they aren't the best to pack and travel being so delicate.

@Weathergirl5 :
Good suggestion; I really miss the scent of Real berries. Used to help my Gramama make home made ice cream, and usually, strawberry. We would slice the berries for her; they smelled and tasted So good, then. Strawberry ice cream is Still my favorite.

@MissAmericanPie :
Some are grown here, other fruit comes from Mexico, or Spain. They do pick the fruit early, and pack it for shipping, and use cold to retard the fruit from maturing. I learned a lot about this from the work my son's company does for fruit growing companies.

WOW, they've been $9.99-12.99 past couple of years. Tomorrow they'll be 1/2 off.🤣

@jv339 :
Still expensive, though you are right. They will keep them until the chocolate coating separates, and the berries get gummy...and No one buys them. :0

@LittleTexas : Doing a little research…California produces over 60% of strawberries in the US, no surprise. But they DO grow here and you can go pick them at farms:

Tx just doesn't seem to produce them commercially…
