So, I have seen one of the videos where you can see the loss of power donnatella, 3 times to be exact....let me go find it. Also, there are emergency generators that automatically come online. So lights and things would not necessarily completely go away. The backup steering is a whole other component and they use sound powered radios for those communications, but that's if someone got down to the emergency steering room in time. Let me find the video.

@Chiza : This particular vessel was an older leased one so some of the safety requirements may not be up to date as the newer ones. Despite guidelines, some of these vessels are still in the global carrier's fleet. We are fortunate that our 23 vessels are for the most part less than 10 years old, with a few exceptions of leased vessels.

Yes, the anchors carried onboard vessels are probably about 5 shots in length (1 shot is 90 feet or 15 fathoms) McCauley3....they likely had 2 anchors at the bow...maybe one on the stern. I don't know the specifics of this vessel. But they would have been able to drop anchor.

@Chiza : I am by no means as knowledgeable about being a Capt on a vessel as you but do know just enough to be dangerous and at the rate of speed they were going, dropping all the anchors and going into full Reverse would not have stopped this. So my conspiracy theory revolves around what was the situation with their back-up power?

@Chiza : so it did, basically, swing and appear to aim

Chiza : I am wondering, why do these huge ships not have tugboats guiding them thru the bridge area? I have seen this when going over to bridge when I go to the beach. Is it normal for ships not to be ushered thru?

Probably not required in the area @TEXASGIRLMAMMA....and for the size of the vessel. I would have to look up more specifics on the vessel and waterway. I know in Houston, tugs come alongside for bigger deep drafted vessels much earlier on....but the normal size vessel they don't get alongside until closer to docking.

Chiza: Thanks for the great information, very fascinating! Holy moly, I was totally unaware, 15 fathoms X 5 sounds awfully deep but totally necessary. I wonder how long it takes to sink those anchors. Probably seems so long in an emergency.

When you let go the break, those things fly out of the chain locker @McCauley3....its actually not the anchor, but the chain that holds the vessel.

My assumption @donnatella, again, it's an assumption....but when they got the power back on the 1st time, they tried to immediately counter steer from the direction they were going, and taking into consideration the wind and current...and that's what looks like a veer towards the pier. Again, I'm not saying it doesn't look bad by any means....but I'm giving the Pilot onboard the benefit of the doubt. He/She is American and unless extenuating factors, has the conn...once the black box records come out....that will tell all.

TEXASGIRLMAMMA : I read a tug did guide them to point where to usual location before detaching. Wouldnt be surprise if those procedures change. It after that they lost power. They had propulsion problem a few years before in Europe cause damage at a port over there. The ship got into a bunch of problems for keeping the crew on the boat longer than the terms and no pay.

Thats normal protocol @e, but yes, that will likely change. Seems like the owner of the vessel and their company may need to be looked into further. But I'm refusing to put blame on the Pilot until more details come out.

@Chiza : I agree. Too much speculation out there right now.

Chiza : lots of info here from NTSB You probably can explain more of this www.ntsb.gov/investi gations/Pages/DCA24M M031.aspx

I understand why the NTSB will be conducting the investigation @e...no real new information out, which isn't a surprise. And I'm glad their focus is on the S&R right now. It will take time for all of the details to come out. Ilk just keep the different teams in my prayers as well as all those affected.
