@Chiza :
Thanks for your insights! The video I have seen of it falling, is chilling. I did hear that the boat captain was able to put out a mayday (?, I think they called it that? proper term here?), and law enforcement were able to stop traffic that was just about to cross. So tragic, in so many ways.

I'm glad it doesn't appear to be a terrorist issue so far. I'm sure there's a manifest or consist of what's in those containers and where they are located on the ship.

There most definitely is @billcherie2. All containers and their contents are accounted for on a manifest. Weight, size....etc all taken into consideration when loading....and the officer in charge of cargo knows what gets loaded or unloaded at each port. It may seem nonsensical to some....but there is an intricate process to keeping everyone and everything afloat.

Chiza : So as a Capt of the tug you operate, what is the protocol when you lose power? It is clearly evident that this vessel lost power twice before it hit the bridge.

What I could see, it lost power 3 times that I could see....@TexasTideFan. And I operate a tow, not a tug. The tugs were not alongside during these operations, which is not abnormal because of speed and constraints....had the tugs been alongside....who knows what would have happened. The vessel also had a bow thruster, but at the speed it was moving and with the loss of power, it was useless. When I lose power on my tow, we attempt to swap generator/steering....wherever we've lost control. If that doesn't happen...we veer to the bank. I'm fortunate, we can generally hit the "hill" (a bank or the ground) to avoid impending traffic....not always, but generally.

From what I have seen, proper calls were made @LittleTexas...but the internal black box will tell all.

Baltimore's Key Bridge collapses after being hit by ship; crews search for survivors.... This is devastating...Prayers for all. This incident represents the most severe US bridge collision since the Tampa Skyway Bridge disaster in 1980. (I used to live right by the Skyway Bridge) I'm not going to speculate, but what I do know....is the ship lost power multiple times. There were likely "Pilots" onboard....but without power, maneuverability is extremely limited, if there at all. Here is the article... gcaptain.com/ship-lo st-control-before-hi tting-baltimore-brid ge/?fbclid=IwAR

@Chiza : I know you work in this industry. I don't really know what you do but, I am sure this hit you a little hard. Be careful out there! Prayers for everyone involved and for the victims.

Big Bayou Canot was something I used for RADAR class @Wiseowl....RADAR was new when the incident happened. The WOW (wheelman on watch) didn't know what he was looking at. 1 inch....1 tenth of an inch for a rail road track is significant....terrible. all of them, terrible. And I promise you, no mariner in their right mind wanted or wished for these things to happen. There are so many rabbit holes you could go down...most end up incredibly devastating.

No matter the flag of the vessel or the "person in charge" @TEXASGIRLMAMMA....its overwhelming. It's sad...and it's devastating to the industry and our economy. The hits come from so many avenues. Although generally the safest way to transport cargo....one mishap puts our industry in the limelight for a long time.

@Chiza: A harbor pilot would have been on board right? Seems like nothing he can do with a loss of power. Thanks for your insight on this. I did see that the missing were part of a construction crew repairing pot holes. Poor guys.

Yes, most likely a Harbor Pilot @Baldrick. I am not sure what is required up there....however, the Captain of the vessel is always the Captain of the vessel. Harbor pilots are just there for their knowledge and get paid for that knowledge. That being said...with loss of power, for whatever reason....there is a lot of "blame" up in the air. I saw that too about the construction crew....all of it is so sad.
