Tourette's

Does anyone have experience with a child with Tourettes?

My child was officially diagnosed with this last Fall. It tapered off recently until the past week. Now
it's back, worse than ever.

I understand hormones / growing can trigger... as well as stress/anxiety. Hoping for feedback on cognitive behavior therapy, allergy testing, vitamin regimen....

His head shaking (and now arm shaking - almost seizure-like) is worse than ever before and causes headaches and he feels others are judging him. He's in a smaller private school, and the teachers are aware so I trust they will shut any negativity down.

Just hoping someone else has insight as to help ease the symptoms? 4951

@ctl74 : have you looked into online schools.
My daughter attends k12.com and she is doing so good and your son wouldn't have to worry about being picked on. 4951

@ctl74 : I had an ex that experienced things like this with her child:

We never had to do CBT but did learn much via specialist dialogues.

The things that seemed to work best were:

. Delete all caffeine from intake as well as sugars. That includes candy, sodas, and ice cream.

. Keep to a daily routine as much as possible to reduce anxiety within the home. (Meal times, bed times, etc).

.Encourage physical outlets (exercise) to reduce stress and to also provide an energy outlet. Running, biking or group sports depending on age.

.Reduce overstimulation from internet/video games. They're ok to play but set a time limit.

.Pay close attention to what may be unique stressors and try to minimize them as much as possible. Every child is different.

Age 7-10 was really tough. He also had severe head tics.

By the age of 13 he completely grew out of them....his disorder was labeled as "transient."

I hope that this helps. It's a difficult thing to go through. 4951

@HumbleMommy : Sometimes add'l isolation isn't a good thing....especially when learning to cope with a problem.

My ex's son actually had great experiences during his issue within HISD. The children were extremely accommodating and he had lots of friends.

Of course there's always a few that will make comments but that's also life. 4951

@TXtransplant : I guess everyone's situation is different. My house always has people visiting (like everyday)and my kids do alot of outdoor activities and participate at church events so we always have things going on so I dont worry much about isolation. 4951

@HumbleMommy : Of course it is. I wasn't at all trying to cast doubt on the choices you have made for your family:

If I came across as such I apologize.

@TXtransplant : k12.com has 2 different online school programs one is tuition free and the other is like private homeschool.
She has scheduled classes throughout the day with a teacher and about 40 students from around the world. She has all the materials sent at the beginning of the school year so I have invested $0 into this. They provide laptop and printer as well.
In case she misses a class the teacher records the lesson and she has to watch on her own time and do the work. My daughter is very focused so k12 is so easy for her. This was her 1st year and we loved it. She is testing in June to skip a grade and get bumped up to 8th next grade. 4951

@HumbleMommy : That's great! Honestly I see virtual school as our educational future in many ways (except for sports).

Thank you for your candid feedback. 4951

DS was diagnosed in 4th grade. Over the years he had a few vocal tics and he generally has some sort of motor tic. @TXtransplant's diet and exercise advice is spot on. At his neurologist's recommendation, we also got him a set of drums that he could beat the hell out of as he went through puberty. A lot of kids will just outgrow it during that time, but some get worse. His needle never really moved one way or the other. He does have sensory issues in that his shirts have to be extra soft and cannot have tags, he's 18 and never had a soda because he absolutely cannot stand fizz, his taste palette is bland bland bland, and he often suffers from insomnia. All that being said, he's made his way through high school just fine, has plenty of friends, a fantastic and beautiful girlfriend that's madly in love with him, plays cello for both the high school and Kingwood Pops orchestras, and is off to SHSU to study music education and play cello in the Fall.

One thing I would add that I haven't read above yet is that even when they don't have external tics, their mind can still very much be a jumble. His neurologist described it to us like this: pretend that your brain is a bowl and it's full of marbles - now dump another bag of marbles on his brain.

I'd encourage you to join the FB Tourette's Association page. They post a lot of good articles, have some uplifting stuff, and of course are a fantastic support for you. 4951

@ctl74 : You've not said how old he is, so I'm going to go off when my son was diagnosed. He was in 4th grade so maybe 9 or 10 and he didn't want anyone at school to know. On a field trip one of his pals made fun of a vocal tic...DW and I dubbed it the whining dog between us...and DS ran crying to his mother. The other boy's mother was there as well and they are great folks. She was gutted when DW told her what happened and it kind of forced things into the spotlight. We bought a book (I think it was Tic Talk but not positive) and talked with his teacher about it. He had a 504 by this time so she was aware. One day shortly after that field trip during story time she read the book to the class and then opened up discussion and asked if the class knew anyone with Tourette's. DS raised his hand and said that he had it. One of his gal pals that had been with him since kindergarten spoke up and said something like, "We don't care. You're still Ethan to us." Pretty much ended the embarrassment for him. Kids can be mean, but they can also be incredibly compassionate and understanding. 4951
