You can adjust your notifications about a discussion now, to "Normal", "Watching", or "Mute". "Normal" means you'll get a notification only when you're mentioned on that thread. "Mute" means you won't get any notifications about that thread any more. "Watching" is for threads you want to keep a closer eye on - You'll get a notification (not an email) for every reply. By default now, threads you create yourself will automatically be set to "Watching", but you can change it any time.
