@Longstocking: my thoughts exactly....tell her she has exactly 3 working days to make good on it or it will be turned over to the district attorney's office..........that will get her attention!

You probably can't prove criminal intent, and calling the police or district attorney will not get you anywhere (unless you're talking about a really big check).
I know it's frustrating, but as a business owner, you should count on 1/2% to 2% (depending on what business you're in) of the checks you receive bouncing...

@jk: Depending on the amount of the check, you can still turn it over to the da's office. All it would take is a traffic stop or an outstanding warrant check/run through N.C.I.C and boom they would have you in handcuffs off to jail for those charges alone ( I know because it happened to a former restaurant owner years ago).

take her to small claims court & get your money back plus court cost & filing fees . It will cost her 4 times the amount by the time she gets out of small claims... (LOL) but 1st I would take the check across the street & tell her she either pays or goes to court ...simple. But do it in a nice way so you do not appear to be demanding or a bi_ _ h , that way she can not say anything bad about you in court.

Would it be against the law to post a picture of a returned check on a closed account that I recieved? I have been in business for a little over a year now and have gotten 5 hot checks. 3 of them were mistakes and paid for immediately and are still very loyal clients. One was one that, I believe, was actually a stolen check. The other one is from a lady that wrote me a check from a closed account and I have tried to get her to take care of it several times with no response, but she actually had the nerve to open up her very own business right across the street from me. I can't believe a business owner would actually give another business owner a hot check that was within walking distance of each other. It's almost funny in an annoying kind of way. Maybe I should just go to her establishment and purchase something and tell her to take it out of what she owes me.. lol
@petstylist:
Why would you want to post a picture of the returned check? How much we talking here - less than a hundred? File a complaint with the DA and move on.
Get a CC swiper or a Square and only take CC or Debit cardes.

yes , 1st make a copy of the check & take the copy with you so if she goes to grab it she will only get a copy & you will still have the original safe & sound when & if you have to go to small claims.
Any way take the copy across the street & very sweetly ask her if she has forgotten she gave you a bum check & if she would like to pay you in cash for the check before you take her to small claims .
The worse she can do is throw you out of her store , then you can take her to court. Maybe face to face she will give you the money she owes you ...then you can refuse to give her service again once the debt is paid in full.
Just remember face to face is always better than over the phone because it's harder to get away (LOL).
