Unfortunately there are some people out there that don't consider the true impact of their "little joke". Maybe someone can trace the phone and find the people. Sorry to hear your family is suffering.

So, my brother inadvertantly left his phone in a restaurant this morning. Appearantly, they watched him drive away and took note of his car. A few minutes later, some jackwad claiming to be his wife texted someone on his phonelist sayinf he was just killed in a car accident. The jackwad even texted a picture of a similar make/model car obliterated by a semi truck that they pulled off the internet. I started gettinf texts and facebook messages from people sending their condolences. I was like WTF?! I called my little (adult) sister and cautiously broke the news to her half trying to find out if it was true. She hadnt hears anything but started calling other family members. Then my father called me in tears to "break the news to me." What a cluster.... Someone finally got a hold of my brother at work who was unaware he didnt have his phone. It was ugly...and not before the facebook-sphere and family went through a lot of grief. What woukd possess a person?!
@SeeVee: Sorry this happened to you & your family. Just out of curiosity, is there a way they can pull a call log to see when this was sent & from where?

@mardigrasman: SeeVee's note indicates that they know when it was sent, but my guess is the best they'll be able to find is the cell-tower when the text was sent (which is probably the one closest to the restaurant). If the phone has GPS capability and if it is left on, authorities can get an exact location of the phone.

They are lucky that no one got hurt in a frantic getting news like that. News like that can cause loved ones to have heart attacks....they could have been brought up on involuntary manslaughter charges in such a case.
There actually may be some kind of public nuisance or passing false information or dangerous practical joke type law I would most defiantly look into.

did a worker in the restaurant do it? let the manager know im sure they could narrow down to the guilty party by who has access to left items. i dont know what they would do when they find out but any manager worth his salt will not tolerate that.
