I haven't seen a whole cooked catfish in years. Typically, they can be found at the higher end restaurants, but I wouldn't know where.

I don't dislike Zachary's...it's just not my favorite place. I do like their shrimp po'bo though.

I've never eaten alligator. Anyone around here serve it?
@jax: I'm from south LA and I've eaten lots of gator. The Monument Inn by the San Jacinto Park make some good fried alligator!

I used to like seafood, but anymore can't stand it hardly. Almost everything that lives in, sometimes goes in, or is related to something that does has a fishy taste to me. I had some frog legs a few weeks ago, usually one thing I love, and even those tasted fishy to me. Sure they were most likely frozen, not fresh like we used to get, but still. Even cat fish has been turning me off lately, except for a piece I had at sharky's a couple weeks ago.
Is there somewhere in the area that you can get a whole fried catfish? Not just fillets?
@FoFa: A few rounds of bad seafood will put you off of it for a while. I also prefer whole fried catfish over fillets. They remain moist and have more flavor than fillets. Unfortunately, I haven't found anyplace around here that does whole fried catfish. I've mentioned on here before that we really need a good old fashioned fish house around here. You can go up Hwy59 a few hours and your start seeing catfish houses. Whenever we visit relatives in northeast LA, we always go to a little catfish house that is a buffet and they have both fillets and whole fried catfish! Now, I'm hungry!

@Retired_Engineer:
No, it is a age changing tastes thing.
i have always disliked broccoli and brussel sprouts (not a hate like scuzmaters however), but the same time I started disliking seafood I have also started loving both of those.

@FoFa: Man, replacing seafood with broccoli and brussel sprouts is tough! Actually, I love broccoli and brussel sprouts and many other vegetables that I hated when I was younger, but I still love seafood. One of the strangest things I've had happen to my taste buds..... I can no longer taste avocado. It's creamy, but I absolutely do not taste anything when I eat avocado.

Early 80's there was an oyster bar by what is now papa's BBQ and Carmax on the SW Freeway just north of bellaire. I worked at Geosource (it's now the Carmax) at the time. Don't recall the oyster bar name, but they had the best whole fried catfish I think I have ever had. About twice a week we would just walk over and have it.In 85 we moved to a building in the Galleria area and it must have closed because i never say it again.

Isn't the tail the best part of the alligator?
@JJ: Yes. You can get nice strips (loins) of meat from the tail. There is really not much "meat" in the rest of the gator unless you are very hungry or very hardcore Cajun.

@Retired_Engineer:
I thought I heard that from someone. The rest of the the gator is really fatty, oily meat, right? Kind of like a hog?
