Anyone know anyone that has one or 2(Guinea pig is my first pick, but other would be ok) they are looking to re-home(will pay fee if need be), I'm having a hard time stomaching a pet shop purchase......:-/..I know there are a few rescues but the only 2 I found wants you to purchase this huge 100-200 buck special made cage for the piggies that THEY sponsor...That doesn't sit right with me. If they have a cage that would be nice if not I can go purchase one but one I like not one dictated to me for my home.

I'm experienced with small critters as I have had many in my home since I was a teen..Im 44 now...LOL In fact we just had 2 guinea pigs for years but they died when we moved into the house we found later had Chinese Sheetrock(no longer in that home) and believe that is what killed them, I threw that cage away to be safe...it was huge and nice too...:-/

How about a bunny rabbit?  We had neighbors who had one they let roam the house, and it was potty trained to go in a litter box type thing.  I had a guinea pig when I was young.  It was OK, but more work really than enjoyment.  They sometimes bite too!

Bunny would probably be ok, I once had one potty trained too...We had him for like 8 years...miss the little booger....LOL

Guinnea's aren't for everybody but Our family has had many and we had some really cool ones that we bonded well with...I think generally you love them or dont and we loved them...LOL

Heck at this point I'm even thinking mini pig...I mean an actual mini pig...LOL

rats are actually very good with kids. i had one in my classroom when i was teaching. she was my baby. she was so very smart and affectionate. they don't typically bite and scratch like hamsters and other small animals.

All these small critters are fine its just Dawn wants a guinea pig again more then the others but she would be ok. with others..we all have first choices and hers is a Guinea....LOL Im really just asking if anyone knows anyone trying to find a good home....I know no sooner then I buy one from a nasty pet shop someone is gonna say oh man my so and so has a set they must re home because(fill in blank) and then I'm gonna have a V8 moment. So before I hold my breath and reluctantly buy from a petstore thought I would ask around.

i don't know about getting one that way though. only because what if they're trying to get rid of it because it's a bitter??

BTW to ease any ones mind, I'm not the type to expect my kid to  care for alone and be in charge of animals, nor do I allow harsh play.....Any pet in my home is mine first and I share with the other humans under my rules....LOL

Not to mention you have no way to know how old it is.. I would hate to adopt one and then have it die.. After all you have been through...

Forum classifieds has a beautiful black one I called on last night and has been pregnant twice, pregnant now and is only 7 months old...I wanna go get her just so she dont gotta be pregnant again next month....lol

exactly, I know animals die and understand thats a chance but would like to decrease my chances as much as possible and petstores are generally mills and you have no idea of the health like you would with a personal owner.

that's the thing with small animals...sometimes they live for a year, sometimes they live for 10! it's crazy. i love animals and all...but i wouldn't be going to a breader for a guinea pig. as much as i hate pet shop animals...doesn't petsmart have a guarantee on their pets??

Yes and if I cant find one this way they will be where we probably will go mainly because they seem to keep their cages cleaner and their caged animals do seem a bit healthier looking to me.
