So many people have told me that their pets were their babies before they got pregnant. Then when the human baby comes the dogs get little to no attention. Why is this?

I have one friend who didn't let that happen. I think she is the exception though.

Your own baby will evoke things in you that a beloved pet doesn't. Even tho you love your pets, your life changes. For the first time you know what it's like to love something even more than yourself. You know that you would give your life for that baby. I don't see why a pet has to be ignored. You do have changes in your life when a baby comes, but it's not so hard to spend time with a pet. They are always there...

1. Laziness

2. People getting in over their head

3. People not thinking/planning ahead and the pet gets the short end of the stick

I love having dogs too much that I don't want kids!

I can understand 2 & 3 to a point but I don't get laziness at all?

Laziness = the pet owner not wanting to take time out to spend or work with their pet anymore due to the baby.

eta pet ownership and having babies are both choices one can make. This is why people should plan ahead, it's not fair for the pet that's been there for 8 years to get dumped because of a new baby due to the parent being too lazy for both of their commitments.

I plan on training my dogs with a stroller on walks at least three months before I am due. I want to walk the dogs and the baby together evey morning, weather permitting. Making it part of the daily routine.
So they will see the baby as part of the pack.
Not sure what else I will do.

I know I am not bringing my baby to a dog park. I will take the dogs to the park when my DH can watch the baby or vis versa.

I guess I just don't get lazy being used that way. Becoming a parent changes your responsibilities, it is more important for the new baby to be cared for first. Babies even come before job. A new mom also has to care for herself and everyone else that depends on her. If the dog doesn't get walked because of everything else to be done, I'm sure the dog will be OK. I promise the dog, in the beginning is not the only thing that will be somewhat neglected. It all evens out and gets to a new normal.

I've never known one single person who dumped a pet due to a baby coming into the household...Now, if all of sudden you had quads or some other multiple, I could see a lack of time with the pet happening.

BooBear, it would be nice if more parents felt that way. The reality is that most new parents end up sending their pet off to die at a shelter bc they don't want the double commitment.

TTH, if I had a penny for every time I've seen it happen I'd be living comfortably.


Here is only 2 examples from my personal list:

Male 10 year old blue Doberman, owner surrender at MCAS, reasoning: they had a baby and didn't have time for their senior dog

Female GSD, AKC papered(not that it means anything), the family called our rescue finally after having the dog TIED up in their backyard for an entire year. Reasoning: they had a baby and didn't want to deal with their pet anymore. That beautiful dog came to us with many behaviorial problems that could have been easily prevented.

We had our two dogs prior to our first child. We treated the girls like all y'all. Once my son was born we treated the dogs well , but made sure they knew they were #4 and #5 in the pack.

We introduced our son to the girls.and they were very intuitive. The dogs treated our boy with kindness and patience, letting him crawl on them and pull their ears.

I had my dogs,then my baby. We all make it work. We are a family. Baby comes first,but my dogs are very well cared for.

   but if they are smaller than a baby, i'd use them as an appetizer instead of after.
